Pancreatic and Bile Duct Drainage

Pancreatic and bile duct drainage refers to endoscopic procedures used to relieve blockages or obstructions in the pancreatic duct or bile duct, which are critical pathways for the digestion of food.

Obstruction in these ducts—often due to gallstones, strictures (narrowing), tumors, or inflammation (like pancreatitis)—can cause severe symptoms and serious complications if not treated promptly.

Why is this procedure needed?
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes)
  • Pain in the upper abdomen
  • Infections such as cholangitis
  • Pancreatitis or pancreatic pseudocysts
  • Bile duct or pancreatic duct tumors
  • Post-surgical complications or trauma
How is drainage performed?

The most common method is via a minimally invasive procedure called Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

Steps may include:

  • Insertion of a flexible endoscope through the mouth into the small intestine.
  • Contrast dye is injected into the ducts to visualize the obstruction.
  • Depending on the cause, the gastroenterologist may:
    Remove stones
    Dilate narrowed areas
Place stents to keep the duct open
    Drain fluid collections like pseudocysts

In some cases, EUS-guided (Endoscopic Ultrasound) drainage may be used when ERCP is not feasible.

    Benefits:
    • Minimally invasive alternative to surgery
    • Rapid symptom relief
    • Treats and prevents infections
    • Facilitates bile flow and pancreatic secretion, restoring digestion
    • Enables tissue sampling if malignancy is suspected
    Is it safe?

Yes, these procedures are safe and highly effective when performed by trained specialists. Mild side effects like bloating or throat discomfort may occur. Rare complications include pancreatitis, bleeding, or infection, which are usually manageable.

      Post-procedure care:
      • Most patients recover quickly and may be discharged the same day or after a short hospital stay.
      • You may be advised to modify your diet temporarily and avoid strenuous activity for 24–48 hours.
      • Regular follow-up may be needed to monitor stents or remove them when appropriate.
