Foreign Body Removal

Foreign body removal is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure performed to safely extract objects accidentally swallowed or lodged in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This service is especially important in children, elderly, or individuals with psychiatric or swallowing disorders.

Common Foreign Bodies Include:
  • Coins, buttons, batteries (especially in children)
  • Bones (fish or chicken)
  • Dentures, toothpicks
  • Food bolus (unchewed meat, etc.)
  • Sharp objects (needles, pins)
  • Magnets or toys
When Is Removal Necessary?

Immediate removal is required when the object is:

  • Causing pain, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing
  • Sharp or pointed, risking perforation
  • A button battery or magnet, due to risk of tissue damage
  • Obstructing the food passage (esophagus, stomach, or intestines)
  • Still present after 24 hours without passing naturally
How Is It Performed?
  • A flexible endoscope is inserted through the mouth under mild sedation or anesthesia.
  • The object is visualized and safely removed using specialized graspers, baskets, or nets.
  • The procedure is quick, safe, and typically does not require surgery.
Benefits of Endoscopic Foreign Body Removal:
  • Quick relief of symptoms
  • Prevents complications like bleeding, perforation, or infection
  • Minimally invasive – no cuts or incisions
  • Often done as a day-care procedure
Is It Safe?

Yes. When done promptly by an experienced gastroenterologist, the procedure has a high success rate and low risk of complications. Patients typically resume normal activity the same or next day.

Foreign body removal is an essential emergency endoscopic service that provides immediate and effective relief from potentially dangerous GI obstructions.
